OCR Accuracy Benchmark 2026: We Tested 5 Tools on 1,000+ Documents

We tested FastOCR, Tesseract, Google Cloud Vision, Amazon Textract, and ChatGPT on over 1,000 documents across 10+ languages. Here are the results — including per-language accuracy, speed benchmarks, and file format support.

Methodology

This benchmark was conducted in June 2026 using a standardized dataset of 1,000+ documents spanning 10 languages. Each document was processed by all five tools, and accuracy was measured using Character Error Rate (CER) and Word Error Rate (WER) metrics.

  • Dataset: 1,000+ documents (scanned PDFs, images, screenshots) across 10 languages
  • Languages tested: English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German
  • Metrics: Character Error Rate (CER), Word Error Rate (WER), processing speed
  • Document types: Printed text, handwritten notes, scanned books, receipts, invoices, multi-column layouts
  • Image quality: Range from 150 DPI (low) to 600 DPI (high) to test robustness

Overall Accuracy Results

The table below shows average Character Error Rate (CER) across all documents. Lower is better — a CER of 5% means 95% accuracy.

Key Findings

  1. FastOCR leads overall accuracy: With a 96.8% average accuracy across all languages, FastOCR outperformed all competitors — especially for RTL languages like Arabic (95.1%) and Urdu (94.3%).
  2. Google Cloud Vision is the closest competitor: At 95.9% average accuracy, Google Cloud Vision is strong but requires GCP setup and charges per request.
  3. ChatGPT performs poorly for OCR: Despite being a powerful AI, ChatGPT's 81.5% average accuracy makes it unreliable for document text extraction, especially for non-English text.
  4. Tesseract has improved but still lags: Tesseract 5.x (87.2%) is better than older versions but requires technical setup and struggles with complex scripts.
  5. RTL languages reveal the biggest gaps: Arabic and Urdu accuracy differences between tools are 20+ percentage points — this is where purpose-built OCR matters most.

Conclusion

For most users, FastOCR provides the best combination of accuracy, speed, and ease of use. It leads in overall accuracy (96.8%), processes documents faster than competitors, and requires zero setup. For developers needing API access, FastOCR offers a documented API alongside its free web interface.

Google Cloud Vision is a strong alternative for enterprise workflows already on GCP, but the accuracy advantage of FastOCR — especially for RTL and Asian scripts — makes it the better choice for multilingual document processing.
